Everything changed when the internet was born.

Marketing was no exception.

While other industries were trying to figure out how to migrate online... Digital marketing had to invent itself from scratch.

All of a sudden, the traditional methods were gone. You couldn't just start blabbing your message and expect everyone to listen.

The one-to-many approach worked for decades, but it died at the beginning of the ".com" era. If you try to use it in 2021, you may as well just burn your money.

Nobody wants to hear mass messages...

Today, it’s all about connections. Personal connections

Strong relationships are what keep your audience around for the long haul.

And like every relationship, your relationship with your audience requires effort.

And the best way to put in that effort is to engage with your audience.

Think of the internet as a big VIP party or a night out at the club. (Omnia in Vegas is one of my favorite spots… shhh keep that to yourself)

Your job is to shake as many hands as you can and truly connect with people.

Every social platform is based on this and rewards you for doing it right.

Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn all care about the way you talk to your audience. If they see that you’re making deep connections, they’ll push more people your way.

Take a look at social media superstars like Gary Vaynerchuk, Tai Lopez or Grant Cardone. Every time they go online, they’re making sure people engage with their content.

From simple shout-outs to giveaways, they make people feel a need to respond.

In today’s hectic online world, this is how you make people stop shopping around and become loyal to you.

If they see that you truly care about them, they’re all yours.

FOREVER.

If you’re not doing engagement marketing, you’d better start now...

Because the ones who are already doing it are way ahead of you.

If that feels a little overwhelming, here's a trick: It’s all about letting people know you’ve heard their voice.

Acknowledge when people respond, and they'll feel validated and accepted.

When they feel validated and accepted, they respond more often... And when whatever platform you're on sees the activity, they'll flood you with more and more people.

Make this happen and you’ll never have trouble growing your influence again.

Make A Dent In The Internet

I'm afraid I've got some good news and some bad news.

Bad news first. The internet is MASSIVE.

In my experience, most people don't seem to understand how big it really is.

YouTube is uploading almost 1 MILLION hours of content per day...

There are going to be 3 BILLION users on social media this year...

And the average person sees almost 10,000 ads PER DAY...and spends over 40 hours online PER WEEK!

So what's the bad news? In that level of noise, it is extremely difficult to stand out.

Let me tell you right now that if you want to grow an audience, half-hearted Facebook status updates once a week are not going to cut it.

To build and keep an audience, you need consistency, strategy, and intentionality.

The good news? There is a shortcut...sort of.
It's called controversy.

Yeah yeah, I know. I've said it before, but it works. AND, it's a shortcut through the ocean of content on the internet.

But, just being controversial doesn't work. It requires a few other magic ingredients that all work together.

3 Things You Need To Change In 2021 (Part 1)

There is an absolutely insane amount of information uploaded to the internet every hour. 

To stand out, you need a strategy that will maximize engagement and grow your audience.

So.

The first thing I tell all my clients is to figure out a content strategy. Decide what percentage of your content is going to be what, and then stick to it.

A good variety of content 'types' will help keep people engaged and build your audience.
If you need some ideas for types of content, read on!

Adding Value:

This can be everything from insider tips and tricks to how-to videos. People will continue to follow if they continue to get real value.

Personal Content:

Your audience wants to connect with YOU. This means it's time to get up close and (sometimes uncomfortably) personal. Stories from your past and business, personal anecdotes, whatever. This should be content they can't get anywhere else.

Sales:

This is where you can pitch your product to an audience that already loves you. The sales part of your content is likely going to be the easiest to create, so be careful not to overdo it.

Motivational:

Ok, ok, I get it. You don't want to be the warm and fuzzy Insta-famous guru...BUT! 

You do need some part of your content that motivates people in one way or another.

This doesn't even have to be positive motivation! If you call people out well and motivate them to change, they'll attribute part of the change to you.

And when that happens, they’ll be loyal. And a loyal audience is worth $$$.

3 Things You Need To Change In 2021 (Part 2)

Do you or your team still post content manually?

If they do, then you need to change things pronto.

Batching, scheduling, and automating social media content is the best way to stay on top of it.

Trying to manually adhere to a schedule takes time and effort, and is difficult to sustain.

So.

Rather than have a daily post be a constant burden on you, batch things together. 

Pick a day, and hammer out 14 posts. Take the whole day if you have to. Then use a scheduler to automatically post them for the next two weeks.

You'll stay relevant with your audience without the burden of posting daily.

When we started automating a large part of our social media, it became easier and easier to stay on top of it. And then because things became more efficient, we were able to create more of it!

You know the one thing that has made the biggest difference to my marketing?

Education.

Everything from old school books from the days of mail-order adverts to insider social media groups.

We are in a world that changes every day, and what worked even 2 years ago will NOT work today.

If you aren't staying relevant and up to date on the world of social media, you're a ship without sails.... at some point you're going to wreck.

Instagram and Facebook are notorious for changing their policies without notice. What worked on YouTube last year won't work this year.

Even Google SEO seems to change at an unreasonable pace.

Without an ongoing education, your competitors will leave you in the digital dust.

So.

Go join some strategy groups. Go do some research on what is working THIS YEAR. Because as far as the internet is concerned, last year was last century.

Why People Buy Brand Names

Do you know why people buy brand names?

Here's a hint: it's not because they think a certain brand is the best option.

Sure, there are instances where one brand is inarguably better than everyone else...

But for the most part, that's not the case.

People don't buy brand names because they truly believe they're the best... They buy brand names because they're pretty certain they aren't the worst.

I'm going to restate this because it's important.

People buy brand names because they're pretty certain they aren't the worst option.

Why do you pay 3 times the price for branded yogurt instead of generic yogurt? Because you know the branded stuff probably isn't horrible.

Why do you buy brand-name shoes instead of no-name sneakers? ...even though in some cases they come out of the SAME FACTORY?

Because the branded ones give you the confidence you aren't making a mistake.

People hate making mistakes. And buying a brand name gives them confidence that they aren't making one...

And this fear of mistakes holds true in everything from Real Estate to pasta brands.

So.

If you can learn to establish yourself as a brand in people's minds, they'll stick with you because they know you.

Then, if you can truly become the best option, you'll be unstoppable.
